“Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron and Hezron begot Ram. Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon and Nahshon Begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.” (Mt 1:3-6)
An account of Jesus’ ‘family tree’ and four women get a special mention:
- Tamar, the Canaanite woman who tricked her father-in-law into having sex with her so that she could raise sons for her dead husband (Genesis 38)
- Rahab the harlot who lived in Jericho (Joshua 2)
- Ruth, the Moabite, who chose her mother-in-law over her own family.
- Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah; she cheated on her husband with his boss (2 Samuel 11) and went ahead to hurriedly marry him after he had her husband killed in order to cover their affair and her resultant pregnancy.
Four scandalous women, three of whom were from nations that God disapproved of and yet the Bible draws our attention to them. No attempt to hide the black sheep in the lineage of Him who knew no sin!
“Suddenly God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: a Saviour has just been born in David’s town, a Saviour who is Messiah and Master” (Luke 2:9-11)
This is the GOOD NEWS, that no matter who you are, irrespective of anything you might have thought, said or done, YOU are the reason Jesus came.
If you have ever thought of yourself as being unworthy or too far gone, I urge you to remember Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba.
Christmas is about God reaching down to draw people to Himself; it is the story of love, mercy, forgiveness, new beginnings and hope.
There would have been no need for Christmas but for the fact that you and I need a Saviour. YOU are God’s reason for Christmas; YOU are worth the celebration.
